Called to the Impossible? The chances of women ever becoming priests in the Roman
Catholic Church may seem remote. But changes may be afoot at grass-roots level. Some
Roman Catholic women, who have grappled silently for years with their vocation, are no
longer able to deny it. Although there is no official role for them to aspire to within the
church - they are finding, often covert, ways of carrying out their calling to the priesthood.
For this project, some of these women decided to step out of the closet, and be
photographed in their role as “priests.” Through the lens, these Catholic women look
no different than other women who already officially carry out their duties as priests
in other Christian churches. Cover story The Saturday Times Magazine Dec 17, 2005.
